The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Government of India-sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The scheme was launched in 1969 with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of student youth through voluntary community service. The ideals of Mahatma Gandhi inspired the ideological orientation of the NSS. Very appropriately, the motto of the NSS is "NOT ME, BUT YOU."
With the same motto, Sikkim University NSS Cell was initiated on January 8, 2014, and registered with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs (Regional Centre), Govt. of Sikkim.
The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University heads the NSS Advisory Board as its Chief Patron. Sikkim University has two NSS units. The NSS Cell is managed by a team comprising the Programme Coordinator and Programme Officers. The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor appoints all officials for a three-year term, and presently, the positions are held by Dr. Manju Rana, Assistant Professor, Department of Horticulture as Programme Coordinator; Dr. Rachana Rai, Department of Management; Dr. Pradip Tripathi, Department of Hindi; and Mr. Migma Ongdup Lepcha, Department of Lepcha (Yangyang Campus), as Programme Officers.
As all NSS activities are exclusively funded by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt. of India, no fee is charged to the members. The scheme is designed to involve as many students of the University as possible in various social activities and encourage them to become ideal citizens of the country.
Students who dedicate 240 hours of volunteer service and participate in a special camp during two years are eligible to receive an NSS certificate from the University. This certificate can be advantageous for pursuing higher education and may also be considered a valuable asset when applying for public service positions.
All students admitted to the University are free to apply for NSS membership. Application in the prescribed format may be submitted to the NSS Cell in the beginning of Monsoon Semester during the month of August and the notice regarding enrollment is circulated by NSS Cell every year mentioning vacancy and other details.

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is : ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programme.
NSS Symbol
The symbol of the National Service Scheme, as appearing on the cover page of this Manual is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.
NSS Badge
The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The Konark wheel in the symbol has eight bars which represent the 24 hours of the day. Hence, the badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours. The red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
NSS Day
NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.
NSS Song
During Silver Jubilee Year the NSS theme song had been composed. All NSS volunteers are expected to learn the theme song and sing the song during NSS programmes and celebrations.
